Less (empirically) researched are the consequences of robotization on the nature of work, employee well-being and performance (Barley, Citation2015 Cascio & Montealegre, Citation2016 Ghislieri et al., Citation2018 Halteh et al., Citation2018 Parker & Grote, Citation2020), even though the quality of working life and employee engagement are important perspectives for HR (Boxall & Purcell, Citation2015). A significant part of this interest has been on the effects of technology for HRM (Vrontis et al., Citation2021), such as the research on e-HRM (Bondarouk et al., Citation2017), and potential applications of the Internet of Things (Strohmeier, Citation2020). In HRM, however, the role of technology only started to gain more interest since the late 2000s (Cooke et al., Citation2021). Moreover, the effect of technology on work has been studied since the Industrial Revolution when the introduction of machines, such as the conveyor belt, created work characterized by low autonomy and low complexity (Davis, Citation1966 Fraser, Citation1947 Hackman & Lawler, Citation1971). Robotization -using robots in business processes to execute (part of the) work previously executed by employees- is not something new robots have been used in manufacturing for decades (Cascio & Montealegre, Citation2016). We argue that HRM should get involved in the topic of robotization to ensure that well-considered choices about work and working conditions are made. Despite their sophistication, robots are unlikely to take over complete jobs (Davenport & Kirby, Citation2015 Vrontis et al., Citation2021), and human employees remain crucial to obtain productivity and quality (Parker & Grote, Citation2020). Introducing robots in the workplace, means that work will be divided between employees and robots (DeCanio, Citation2016 Parker & Grote, Citation2020). cobots) such as ‘Baxter’: an industrial robot designed to help employees with a variety of tasks (Fitzgerald, Citation2013), and cleaning robots like ‘Intellibot’ that keep airports clean and tidy. Today’s advanced robots function in a wide variety of contexts from military robots like ‘Boomer’ designed to detonate explosives on battlefields (Garber, Citation2013) to collaborative robots (i.e. We broadly define robots as all embodied automated systems. The amount of work executed by robots is expected to almost double over the coming decades (World Economic Forum, Citation2018) with robots increasingly entering workplaces as part of the ‘4 th industrial revolution’ (Cascio & Montealegre, Citation2016). We propose that understanding the consequences of robots on work design supports HR professionals to help managing this transition by both giving relevant input on a strategic level about the importance of work design and advocating for employees and their involvement. Warehouses that lack attention to the quality of work may risk ending up with the negative effects for employees, such as simplification and intensification of work, and reduced autonomy. The positive effects we identified are reduced physical and cognitive demands and opportunities for upskilling. Although the other warehouses did not, sometimes their work design still benefitted from robotization. Only two warehouses used a bottom-up approach, where employees were involved in the implementation and quality of work was considered important. We found that all warehouses robotized tasks based on technological functionality to increase efficiency, which sometimes created jobs consisting of ‘left-over tasks’. In this comparative case study, we explore how robotization changed the work design of order pickers and order packers in eight logistic warehouses. Robots are increasingly used in a variety of work environments, but surprisingly little attention has been paid to how robots change work. The professional try-hard I’m talking about is someone who, in the year 2022, still earnestly and performatively buys into the white-collar hustle and prides themselves on it. We can call the former, if you’re feeling derisive, the “professional try-hards ” I’d love to be flip and just say that, at this point in planetary decline, anyone who’s a little too interested in emails and Google Docs basically counts as a try-hard, but there’s a specific category of salaryfolk and company leadership provoking a justifiable kind of scorn. “Realizing like, I’ve become kind of a unidimensional person…I’m quiet quitting mentally to make room for me to be more than just a worker.” (Klotz allows for the record to show that he, too, was not immune to the Big Quittening’s reach earlier this year, he resigned from his post at Texas A&M University for a new job teaching at University College London.) “People are talking about it as a mindset shift,” says Klotz, who has studied resignations for more than a decade. ![]() Whatever moniker you give it, there’s now increasingly accepted room for the idea that you might step off the professional gas pedal in order to protect your well-being and even sense of identity. “All jobs have core elements of the job, which we call in-role performance…‘quiet quitting’ is quitting everything beyond that, which we call citizenship behaviors-going above and beyond the call of duty,” explains Klotz. Take the latest debate on “ quiet quitting” as a trendy, divisive term for what Anthony Klotz, the management professor who inadvertently coined “ the great resignation” back in May 2021, links to the not-new concepts of worker disengagement and withdrawal. Of those who have given notice, there’s a predictable amount of regret: just not, it seems, amongst the clear majority.Īnd so the future of white-collar work has morphed from an advertiser-friendly thought exercise to an existential question with a daily subset of moral riddles: Is that an illicit midday nap, or is it just work-life balance? Is it really the end of work friends, or is it just that a defensive herd mentality is no longer crucial to getting through the day? Is it worse to work on vacation, or to have a little vacation at work? Is the delivery bot lost in the woods, or is he finally free? Ambitious women are reportedly done with girlbossing (now in vogue: girlresting) and The Wing has officially crashed it appears Kim Kardashian’s assessment that nobody wants to work these days was correct, because even Serena Williams can’t have it all. The antiwork subreddit is the hottest club in town. As the labor market has tightened and the labor movement regains cachet, living “under capitalism” has become a default punchline. Roughly one pandemic later, there has been such an abrupt rupture in the way we work-not to mention how we think and talk about it-that we grasp at new taxonomies for the disillusionment with the hustle: It’s millennial burnout, it’s the “Age of Anti-Ambition,” it’s the Great Resignation. It never occurred to me, or my colleagues, or these brands, to wonder if the real future of work might actually look like something far more radical. We knew advertisers loved the idea of fashioning themselves as part of this revolution, and I still remember how I’d decorate those PowerPoints with stock images of ultramodern office spaces and stylish, suited figures in carefully varied skin tones. One of the most popular themes was what we slickly called “The Future of Work”-a catchphrase cribbed from the marketing and MBA-swinging circles invested in forecasting all the exciting ways corporate life would change amidst peak millennialification of the workforce. During my first job in media in the late 2010s, I was a glorified PowerPoint assembler on a magazine’s marketing team, where we spent our days figuring out what kinds of stories and topic areas corporate brands liked to put their advertising next to. You'll spend your time playing Where the Heart Leads traversing these vignettes, interacting with people Whit knows, trying to make ends meet, and solving familial drama. Here Whit travels to a surreal world in which he can see his entire life unfold, and in which seemingly minor decisions can have major repercussions decades later. His trusty pooch goes to investigate, but falls down the hole because it's a moron, and so Whit does the sensible thing and climbs down into the unknown to save his pea-brain dog. The game begins with our champion, Whit, waking in the night to discover that a gigantic sink-hole has opened up outside his farm. Where the Heart Leads is a video game about life which successfully recreates the tedium of being alive, but only takes the best part of twenty hours to finish rather than seventy-odd years. While it might not be for everyone, those who discover it will likely find themselves better for the experience.Life can be pretty tedious, which is why we invented video games. You'll get lost in a beautiful world full of relatable characters and complex relationships, and there just isn't anything quite like Where the Heart Leads out there right now. Those nitpicks, and they are nitpicks, likely won't really bother too many players as the story of Whit and Rene is captivating enough to push through any issues. Because things are a little far off, it can make some sections of the game a little difficult to navigate, especially in darker or snow-covered environments. Also even when completely zoomed in, the character models are quite small, and the dialogue font isn't that large either, which was a little frustrating, as that frequent squinting can take you out of things a bit. You can't just rotate the camera completely to get a better view of where you need to head to next (which is often marked with silhouettes of the characters you are trying to talk to), and at times it can be a little difficult to figure out where a certain character went without just walking around aimlessly a bit until you see one of these silhouettes. The world is lush and fun to explore, and the camera seems to be created to further push you to explore it, as it lets you zoom in and out and pan but only to a certain point. Granted, not everything is perfect, though the biggest issues seem more like a purposeful choice that I just don't love rather than any sort of glitch or major flaw. It's a truly unique aesthetic that sets the game apart from anything else, and it's a style I grew to love. When you head into a building the game pulls the front layer of the area away so you can see the architecture and your characters inside, and the characters themselves are semi-translucent figures other than Whit. That said, its presentation is far from straightforward, with an almost watercolor style effect applied to the game's environments that still gets across the various little details of the various locations in the cities and surrounding land. Where the Heart Leads does have a few game-centric mechanics that you will interact with along the journey, but most of the game is solely focused on dialogue. That's also why it feels so real, even in the most mundane conversations, and despite the surreal circumstances that lead to this story, there were many immensely relatable instances throughout Whit's journey that hit close to home. ![]() There is one early on where you can reveal two huge secrets to your mother, and while it felt like the right thing to do (I even got a Trophy for it), I was surprised to see that it might not have been the most outright beneficial to the family's current predicament, even if it was probably better for the family's cohesion as a whole. As in most games of this ilk, some choices don't really affect the broader story while others change it significantly, but on the whole, it was quite impressive how many choices really mattered and set things on a different path. Again, the star of the show here is the actual story of this family and how your decisions can affect the direction of not only your life but those around you for years to come, and there were many moments where I wanted to immediately go back and see how a change in the decision would change the outcome for my family and friends. ![]() The bits will continue to darken and curl as they dry.įresh cinnamon bark (left photo) curls as it dries (right photo).
